I am new here, but have not seen anyone with this problem... I got my N5200 few days ago, set up RAID5 (with 5xSeagate 7200.10 500GB drives). Everything works more or less fine (mail messages system is horrible, but as I can see new beta FW solves this, at least partially), but I have two problems. First one is minor - upload via web interface doesn't work. I can create new directory, but I can't upload anything (small or large files). It says something about wrong authentification (sorry, I am not by the box right now) - all this error message is strangely simmilar to Apache error messages... But the major problem I have is that I can't use FTP at all. FTP service is working, but I can't log in in any way. If I use anonymous login, I got reply saying that secure connection can not be established. If I use user name and password (I defined only one user just for this purpose), I can pass authentification, but I got error saying that home directory can not be found and I am logged out... So I am without FTP at the moment Does anyone know what may cause this? I want to use FTP for moving big amounts of data (app. 2TB), since it is quicker than Samba/CIFS. In fact I use N5200 for huge data transfers (film DPX scans), where having FTP is more universal (and I mentioned speed already too). Any suggestions? Thanx Setup: N5200, 5x500GB Seagate 7200.10 in RAID5 - all services stopped except HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, CIFS/SAMBA - no groups defined (except predefined "users" group) - only one user defined (for FTP and HTTP access) - only one folder (share) created - firmware rev. 1.00.05 Anyway, N5200 looks good for me so far, it is built solidely, performs nice (for this segment of NAS) and even people at Thecus seems to work on new FW releases to fulfill its potential (at least I hope so).

Hi ondro727,
1) The E-Mail issue is almost finished in 1.00.06.5 so in the final release this issue will be history....
2) For the WEBDAV interface I cannot say something as I'm not using this.
3) The FTP access should be no problem. I've checked how the login is done for FTP: the username and password you enter when connecting the FTP server is handed over to a special shell script which checks if it is possible to access the local SAMBA with these credentials (smbclient -L 127.0.0.1 -U "$username%$password"). If this succeeds, then you're logged in and the home directory will always be /raid/data/ftproot.
So for the moment I can tell you only this: - You need to have a password for the user you login - The password mustn't contain any spaces (programming bug in the software) - User anonymous should be possible - There should be a directory /raid/data/ftproot. If you use either my SERTTY or SSHD packages, you can login to the N5200 and check this.
Good luck,
Andreas

Upgraded firmware to beta 1.00.06.5, but still no good Errors are exctly the same: Anonymous login - "421 Unable to set up secure anonymous FTP" User login - "421 Home directory not available - aborting" Strangely enough, when updating FW, it took only appr. 15-20 seconds (?!), exactly as quick as when I updated from 1.00.03 to 1.00.05, and after the update my old settings (at least email notification settings) are the same - they are not reset to defaults. Is it possible, that there is something wrong with the FW in this particular unit? Is there a way how to "hard reset" the unit (there is no important data on RAID at the moment, so I have nothing to lose). As for SSH, I am not very familiar with Linux (basics only) and I have no idea how to make SSH communication available on N5200 (I am Currently running beta FW) Any help (or link) would be appreciated

Hi ondro727,
OK, I can reproduce your problem: when I rename the folder /raid/data/ftproot on the N5200, then exactly what you're telling happens if I try to connect by ftp. For users the error message "Home directory not available" and for user anonymous the message "Unable to set up secure anonymous FTP" appears.
So, obviously the directory /raid/data/ftproot doesn't exist. Unfortunately I can not tell you why. If there is nothing important on your device, maybe you should try and factory reset and then upgrade to 1.00.06.5 again. If you don't like that, I might consider to write you a small module which creates the ftproot directory for you. Please tell me your decision.
BTW; it is normal that upgrading to 1.00.6.5 takes the same time as from 1.00.04 to 1.00.05. And it is normal too, that all (at least most) of your user settings are preserved - they are written to the hard disk and restored after the firmware upgrade.

That was something I thought was happening... Missing directory structure. But how is that possible?! I did try to reset the unit (via web interface - Load factory defaults), and then to re-flash FW (1.00.05 again to 1.00.05), but nothing has changed. My preferences got reset, but FTP didn't work. All the same with 1.00.06.5 beta FW - factory defaults, reflash, no FTP... And I still can't use HTTP upload either, it generates error (Internal Server Error) - I don't want to use HTTP for transfers, but it maybe a good indication, that some scripts are also missing in file/directory structure So the question is, is there a way how to "hard reset" everything (even maybe RAID settings if necessary), to get unit to deafult state? Or may it be that there is a problem with flash memory on my unit, since I can't find anyone else with this problems (FTP and HTTP upload not working)? As I have written before, updating firmware took about 15-20 seconds only, which looks strange to me for >30MB binary to program (?). Is it normal? I guess there should be a way for such complete reset, but I don't know how. The other thing is that even if you write a module (would you really?! ) a don't know how to "install" it. I searched forums and WIKI also, but I can't find the basics - how to "get into" N5200 to install anything (well, sys user and SSH would do, the rest would be much easier then...). Is there something like "basics for lamers", so I can start somewhere? ;D Thank you very much for your help. I can see that this forum in fact do something, which originally Thecus support should have done. They did not answer to me yet, not a word The bright side is, that when compared to D-Link DNS323, which I have at home, N5200 looks almost flawless...

See the modules list at onbeat.dk/thecus/index.php/N5200_Module_List and you are right in the Wiki it isnT' actually mentioned on how to install the modules. If you download them it is writtenin the readme You install the modules like a new firmware. Unfortunately the present modules do not work with the new beta (AFAIK at least).

Hi ondro727,
please send me a private message with your E-Mail address. I will send you a module which checks and repairs the directory /raid/data/ftproot. The module is called FTPROOT.
The module only works for firmware 1.00.06.5 and can be installed/deinstalled as often as you want - it will only correct/add missing entries and will not delete anything.
In order to see the results of the repair procedure you need to configure E-Mail notification on your N5200 as the module installation process will send E-Mail to all configured users. But this is not mandatory
Good luck,
Andreas

... making progress - FTP running. Thanks to all for hints and help As soon as I am done with my small "research", I'll post the summary. Stay tuned. Thank you once more

Everything is fine finally, thanks to help from you A really appreciate it. My findings (and guesses) follows. All the troubles were caused by wrong disk usage procedure. At first I used only 3 drives (didn't create RIAD yet, but disks were in N5200). Only then, after few days, I added 2 more drives and built RAID5 array. This has caused various problems, mainly with missing files and directories (internal system directories, not data shared folders!). Some of the symptoms are described in previous messages (FTP unable to login due to missing directory, HTTP upload broken due to missing scripts, no default shares for usbhdd/nsync etc.). After removing all drives, resetting N5200 to defaults (still without drives), clearing all partitioning info from the drives... I started "from the scratch", inserted all 5 drives at once (within 1 power cycle), configured N5200, built RAID5 and - everything runs just fine. So the conclusion is probably this - if you plan on building an array in N5200 ( ;D ) use all your drives in one "shot", otherwise N5200 will get confused about drive configuration, probably writing some files/directories to wrong places (or not at all). I may be wrong but all facts known to me indicates that this is the case. Hope nobody else gets into this situation Cheers, O.
