Be careful:
The N2100 does not support delayed spin up of the HDDs or the delay is not quite long enough. We do not sell N2100 with 2x 750GB or 2x 1TB, because when we did, we had a few RMAs of dead power supplies.
The current is not the problem, but the flow. The Amperes rise far over the limits of the ps in those first 10s after powering up.
Just for your information ... maybe some retailers tell you that your warranty is voided if you put in drives not listed in the compatibility-list. (We don't)

Hi, The T7K500 500Gb is listed on the Thecus PDF but not the 320GB Is it safe to presume that the lower capacity works also?

Western Digital 500GB WD5000KS-00M works fine. I have two in a RAID array. I have been using 2 Western Digital 500GB WD5000KS-00M drives in RAID 1, and have had the raid status degraded repeatedly. i contacted both the Thecus and Western Digital support about what's going on. here is what WD had to say: "Thank you for contacting Western Digital Customer Service and Support. There is an update for the YS drives like you saw. The KS drive, however, is not a RAID Edition drive like the YS drive is. We do not recommend using a Non-RAID drive like this in a RAID setup because you will have RAID degradation like you are experiencing. The only way to exchange the drive is through the place of purchase. We can only RMA a drive for a like model." from Thecus: "Hi, From the "conf.bin" our engineers did see one RAID 1 rebuild process started on 2007/04/18 01:31:11. No other rebuilding log found yet. It is possible that the RAID 1 degrade is caused by NAS overheat. We recommend keeping the NAS plastic cover open temporarily to provide better air flow to cool down the HDD's working temperature. This will confirm whether RAID failure is caused by HDD overheating. Best Regards !" i've had the cover off and a fan blowing on the drives, which brought the temperature down from about 50 to 35. drives are still degrading in raid 1.

Installed 2 Seagate ES.2 1TB (ST31000340NS) Raid-0 yielding me a total capacity of 1,907,739 MB Took no time at all to build the raid. I started it and left the house, was back in 30 minutes and it finished before I got home. Had 36GB raptors in there prior to this upgrade. Had to install them and reboot once to recognize the disks. I will not transfer anything important on the disks since I'm concerned with the size and reliability. So far so good in my tests of copying data to it. I'm eventually going to buy a N5200PRO and put more of these 1TB drives in it using raid 5.

I have exactly the same problem with the same drives : WD5000AAKS-0 firmware 12.0 Thecus firmware 2.1.06. Hard drives are brand new, and are reported on the hard drive list as "confirmed" ! Well, it should not ... It seems that raid becomes degraded on each reboot. Have you find an issue ? Anyone ? Downgrade to 2.1.05 is not possible, officially. Is there a way to do it ? Thanks.

What firmware are you using? What are the differences between the AS and NS drives? Edit: Got the drives to work by doing a factory reset.

hi
I'm thinking about to buy a thecus but a bit afraid aboute the noise issue. I'm wondering if a way to reduce noise could be to use 2,5" laptop drives, it would reduce noise from the HD and hotness.
to you have any feedback about 2,5" use ? to you have any idea of the hotness not depending id the hardrives ? if the hotness comes mainly from the 2 3,5" drives, maybe using one or 2 2,5" drives i could stop the fan ?
thanks
(i saw the virtual silent topic, so maybe anyway i'll put a bigger fan and some holes... )

Running around a hour, so maybe too early for "super green":
2x Samsung Spinpoint F1, HD753LJ, 750GB
It is currently building the RAID, so I will it editing later when its done.
EDIT: Works. RAID is completed + and runs perfectly. Okay, Temp is high, (43) but did not yet mod the case for better cooling, as the parts did not reach me yet.
(BTW: now its running Debian ...)

Just added a Western Digital 1Tb Green Power hard disk which works exceptionally well, almost silent and very cool at 29 degrees C.
953,869 Mb formatted Model number: WDC WD10EACS-00Z firmware 01.0

I had been running my N2100 in RAID1 for the past 2 years using WD2500KS OEM drives. About 3 months ago I started getting the "RAID Degraded" warning that increased in frequency to the point that I was getting the message within an hour after rebuilding the RAID. Drive #2 was always the "bad" drive. I had been running the N2100 horizontally with a Netgear 5-port gigabit switch sitting on top of it. Although the temperature always seemed to be around 40C, I wonder if Drive #2 ran hotter being sandwiched between Drive #1 and the switch. Anyway, time to upgrade!
Two weeks ago I got a pair of WD5001ABYS OEM drives. Took a bit of time to copy over all my data, but they have been running well without a single "RAID Degraded" warning. Time will tell if the "server-class" YS series drives are worth the US$25 premium over the WD5000AAKS drives. Of course, I now have the N2100 sitting vertically and away from other heat sources such as the gigabit switch.
