I have a 5200PRO with no drives in it - I took out the 500GB WDs that were in it and have used them in my Buffalo Terastations in anticipation of buying a set of 2GB drives for the Thecus. I'd be very interested to know how well the Samsung HD203WI's are working for you - They're on sale here (AUS) for AUD$187 at the moment. Well after playing about with a 3 drive RAID 5 and not discovering anything nasty I deleted the raid, added the other 2 drives and rebuilt it as a 5 x 2TB RAID5 array. It took 36 hours to build the array, and that's with 1gig of RAM and a P4M processor (which at the moment is being clocked at the standard 1.5Ghz). Uptime currently 8 days. Total capacity 7444.5 GB I've been dumping stuff onto it as a test, currently have 5.5TB on it and it hasn't put a foot wrong. Working fine. The 2TB drives run cooler than the 1TB Spinpoint F1 drives I used to use, probably due in part to them being 5400rpm drives, however I've not seen any impact in data throughput. Win Win :-) So based on my experience, go for it.

Hi, i can confirm that the hitachi 2TB disks work fine: Jonas, what temperatures are you getting from your array (using the info module)? I've recently upgraded my drives to 5x hitachi 2tb, however am concerned about their operating temperature which is way higher than the previous drives. Currently hovering at high 50's as the RAID array builds... I may need to relocate the NAS box to a cooler location, although it was perfectly happy with my 0.5tb drives! thanks, sp.

Well, I took the plunge and relocated the NAS box. Sounds simple, but involved running cat6 cable under the floorboards from my dining room, through to my lounge, through to the understairs, through a couple of skins of brick and then into the garage... One level shelf later, and I had a decent new home for the device. It's brought the operating temperature down to high 40's, touching 50 sometimes. Still seems very high compared to my previous 500GB disks. Am somewhat happier though, as the operating temperatures are specified up to 60. I'd still be interested in any other Hitachi drive owners advising what temperature their devices are running at. cheers sp.

Hi, all, WD10EARS are running fine in my N5200BR PRO. Occasionally got two different models of the WD10EARS, 00Y5B1 and 22Y5B1, see the image attached. Attachments:

My hitachi's are running at around 45 degrees under load...the box is located open space...not in a hifi rack or something. I wont care about temps unless they hit 60....and thats likely not gonna happen. Well, I took the plunge and relocated the NAS box. installed 3 hitachi 5K3000 2TB drives into my N5200BR Pro tonight. all registered in disk menu. currently building RAID 5 array, approx 17-18 hours to complete.
couple of days ago i just installed 1 hitachi 2TB drive as JBOD (created 20GB partition) for a test run. worked fine. did some test read/writes to drive with 1GB RAR file over Gb network, everything worked ok.
will post screen shot of finalised array & performance figures once done.

-hitachi 5K3000 2TB drives -n5200br pro -firmware 2.0.18.4 did some quick file copy tests with large files (3.7GB & 700MB) after cache is saturated; -write 38-45MB/s -read 41MB/s note: i did test over cat5e (1 Gb) between a test pc and the n5200 pro.

N5200 (non-pro) with 2.00.18.4 here. Based partly on this thread, I bought 5x 2TB drives looking to go RAID 5, to replace my old 5x750gb array, and upgraded RAM.
Unfortunately, for me, I don't seem to be able to do anything involving all 5 drives, but if I stick to only a 4 drive array things seem to be OK. I've tried various combinations of RAID 5, RAID 0, and JBOD. I'm wondering if I'm hitting an 8TB limit (nice power of 2) or something.
When things don't work, the system tends to get lost in the formatting stage -- it will create the array and go for hours (e.g. overnight) saying it is formatting but the drive lights are not blinking.
When I try to get creative and fool the system (such as starting with a working 4 drive array and expanding) it will appear to work and the web config will say the right things, but then I can't copy anything to the box -- FTP and Samba will either completely bomb in write access or create 0 byte sized files. Samba returns that there isn't enough disk space in Windows 7 when copying.
I'd really like to get this working, but I guess I can limp along with 4 disk JBOD.

One of them there an error (and a raid build using that drive was expected to take 3500+ mins to finish- ouch) I pulled that drive and am testing it now on another system. I should note that I haven't had any problems with my Seagate 300gb 7200.9's excepot in slot 5. Right now NOTHING works in the 5th bay.

Looking to purchase five 2TB drives at Newegg. Suggestions of drives currently available would be appreciated. They will be going in a newly acquired N5200B PRO that will replace my three Snap Server 4000s.
Thanks, Bob

the problem isn't caused by bios or hardware... n5200 doesn't support disk drives upper 2Tb with thecus firmware... if you install ubuntu or another recent operating system, change all. I have installed openmediavault on N5200 nonpro and have been recognized 3Tb disk drives ( WD30EZRX )
