Doesnt seem like there is much of a reason to upgrade given the list of big fixes.

Is the SSH module don't work on this release ? No, it depends on the already installed ssh. But it won't be that hard to create a module which does work with this and newer firmwares. As long as they don't remove the module interface. Which would be a pretty stupid move IMHO. Mathijs

Without the SSH interface I would not have been able to diagnose the hard disk problem I had... as the S.M.A.R.T interface said everything was fine, which it was not. I would have thrown the N2100 out...
So if they remove these very useful features, 'modules' then their product will not be easily looked after, and go in the bin!
So if you are listening Mr Thecus, let us techies keep the ssh interface and 'modules' else I suspect we will go else ware.
I have a number of potential customers, but now... hummm should I still go this way...

I´m very angry on the politics of THECUS with their customers. So I sent them a Mail. What I wrote was not very friendly, but if they do such things I´m not friendly! I hope they react and send a reply, where they will describe their future dealings with customers. That´s what I wrote: "Dear Ladies and Sirs,
I´m an owner from Germany of your storage produkt THECUS N2100. I bought it in May 2006. The time ago I was satisfied with the product, except the noisy fan. With the cycle of firmware updates, where you fix some bugs in your firmware and enhance the transfer speed, I was pleased, too. Particularly with regard to the firmware update 2.1.01 I was very unhappy, but with the version 2.1.03 I´m very irritated, not to say very angry. That´s because you made it difficult or impossible to connect the N2100 as a linux user. I have paid about 360 € for fully functionality and with the latest firmware update you remove functions! That couldn´t be. I was informing colleagues and friends, that I was pleased with your product. Now I have to revise my opinion and to say the opposite. In the firmware update 2.1.01 I could understand to remove your security vulnerability of the SSH-Server and of the root login password that became public. But for security advances it would be very better, when you will give the user the ability to change the login name of the WebGUI "admin" to a other name. Also you can give him the ability on turning the SSH-Server on and of, as well as changing the root login password. You can afford all this on the WebGUI at the admin pages. You can do this also in the installation wizard for the not so experienced users. What will you remove next? The abillity to install modules? When this will happen, it´s time for me to consult an advocate, how I can reduce the price I paid. Therefore fortunately in Europe exists a two Year warranty. My dealer will be very "happy", I suppose. Also I will announce your practice all over the internet to warn other possible buyers about your dealing with customers.
So at the end I hope you will think on what you will do in the future. If you do the right things you will have friendly and happy customers. Use the benefit from the technically oriented users in the Thecus User Forum or the internet and you can improve the quality and usability of your product.
Yours sincerely
xxxx aka wolfhart1 Germany
PS: I sent you two mails in the past, where I told you the compatibility of my HDD´s (two Seagate ST3320620AS in RAID1 configuration) and printer (Brother HL-5150D). All works very well with the N2100. There I got no response from you, although I would helped you to make your product better and you can give this information to other users. I hope on getting an answer from you now. "So far, let´s see what they will answer, if they answer. When they remove the possibility to install modules, I will show how I can reduce the price of the N2100 at my seller and then I will sell it out via Ebay, as soon as possible. Let me say a few friendly words to all the programmers of the modules: I will thank you for your work. So other users that are not closed with linux, like me, have more posibilities. But I have seen the possibilities with modules, therefore I will become more familiar with linux. (i have to buy a good book in German. If anybody knows one, she or he could tell it, please ). I think it would not so hard, because I know something in programming with C++ and VB under windows. And I remember the black console from DOS, where I did a few things. Special thanks to mshapf for creating a Thecus Wiki and to getmythe (Mr. SSH) for his fast reaction. Have a nice Sunday and nice weather. ;D

Ok I just bought one of these and installed the upgrade and now I can't ssh into it. Also when I tried to install a module, it doesn't show up on the module list!
What can I do now? If there are no answers then I'll take this back and get another one!

Blame Thecus for adding a feature that was never in the specifications? Module Blame Thecus for removing a feature that was never in the specifications page? SSHD I am sure they had a reason to remove it. Space constraint on the flash? For the Media Server edition? I don't know. At least Thecus did not try to remove the Module implementation on their firmware. Thecus is trying to get involved with the Open source community such as Debian, which is not seen with any other vendors product except for NSLU2 from Netgear. Any way, I liked the box. It is not the coolest (literally) box I owned, but after a 5 USD mod, it stays cool. Its performance is pretty good (Sisoft Sandra Read / Write over 24 MB/s). I just hope the new Linux kernel 2.6.18 will find it's way into the standard firmware release.

I'm glad that i waited before applying the firmware. No SSH! That would have been bad! I agree that SSH is something that was never listed as a feature for the n2100 and we're lucky to have had the access we have. Unfortunately i feel like it's the day after christmas and someone has just come and taken my favourite new toy Thecus as a company needs to congratulate themselves on putting together hardware that gets people this involved in it's product. Unfortunately their software development team, rather than embracing this community, seems to be trying to work against us. When i bought my n2100 it took me a couple of weeks to find this forum and from there it's been all systems go. This forum community is providing product support above and beyond anything provided by thecus. Thecus need to acknowledge this and show this forum and it's members a little respect. Also, this community appears to be the only source of module development for the N2100. It's pretty safe to say that without the ssh access few of the modules on the wiki would exist. I know that thecus are aware of this forum. I would like for them to come and participate to some degree. If they could learn to work with this community, it could only benefit them. A post containing a simple courtesy message informing us that they were going to be removing SSH and why would have been nice.

Hello nwk: Thank you for your response . On one side you´re right. They had never made the SSH-server feature public. But on the other hand, before I bougth the Thecus N2100 I informed me well in the internet. There I read about the SSH-feature only on this box. And the other features were also good to very good in comparison with other NAS´s, they were tested on the reviews according to the price. So I contacted an internet-dealer to ask him a few questions. He answered me that the SSH-server could be activated and then I can login under the root account on the linux operating system. I got the URL, were I could find the root password, from him, too. And he gave me the information that the firmware updates from Thecus were very regulary and at new firmware (2.0.00) there is a function for uploading modules. So I asked him, if he can update the box before I will buy it, and he said, that he will do it for a few Euros. I agreed and so I bought it with this features. But not only because of this two features. So at all I´m very happy with the box. But what will you do, when have to read, that one feature, why you bought something, will no more available. So after reading this I was very angry, also because Thecus didn´t announce it. If you would say, that my mail is harshly, you´re right. Also I didn´t know that Thecus is getting involved with the Open source community as one of only two manufacturers. This make them more favourite to me again. I was on the page, you linked, in the past. At this time, I believe, Mr. Michlmayr asked for a Thecus N2100. The modules feature that Thecus had made is very, very good . I won´t miss it. And I won´t miss this good, informative and productive community. Edited, because of my Englisch (My Goodness, I believe, I have to go to school again ;D)
