I bought three Maxtor L01F500 500 GB SATA drives for use with a new N2050. Two drives are for use now, one is a spare for when a drive fails. I am using RAID1 and the N2050 indeed has no problems recognizing these drives (L01F500 is on the HDD Compatibility List as having been successfully tested). I've formatted the drive as NTFS under Win XP Pro and put 20 GB of data on it already (system backups). To make sure my third L01F500 drive was functional, I simulated a drive failure in the N2050 by removing a drive, then powering up again. Sure enough, the N2050 panel LEDs indicated drive #1 failed. So I powered down and installed the brand new, unpartitioned, fresh-from-the-manufacturer's anti-static bag L01F500 drive to the top bay and turned on power again. I expected to see the RAID1 rebuild process, but I did not. Shortly after power-up, the LEDs showed the usual, normal status: power on LEDs lit steadily for drives 1 and 2.
It gets even more weird. When I connected the N2050 to my Win XP Pro system using USB, the drive did not even show up in My Computer. However, using the Disk Manager I found it as drive 7. It showed up as an 8 GB unpartitioned drive (unallocated space).
I have been corresponding with Thecus tech support and so far they have been unable to resolve this issue. They believe that the only reason the N2050 would not rebuild the RAID1 array when a new drive is installed to replace a "failed" drive would be if the new drive were already partitioned. I have repeated my simulated drive failure scenario several times now with identical results. So I am not real comfortable with my ability to recover from an actual hard drive failure. However, I did confirm that when the N2050 detects the simulated (removed) drive, that it maintains normal access to the remaining drive just fine.
Has anyone else installed L01F500 drives and actually performed a simulated drive failure to see if the system recovers properly?
