I have been trying to install Ubuntu (10, 11) Server on my N7700 and have been running into problems where the "mvsas" kernel module throws up errors in detecting the ports. It eventually sees them, but I get weird error messages related to the SATA protocol as shown below:
[ 7.848654] ata12: translated ATA stat/err 0x51/04 to SCSI SK/ASC/ASCQ 0xb/00/00 [ 7.848705] ata12: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } [ 7.848710] ata12: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError } [ 7.853394] ata12: translated ATA stat/err 0x51/04 to SCSI SK/ASC/ASCQ 0xb/00/00 [ 7.853447] ata12: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } [ 7.853452] ata12: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError } [ 7.854424] ata12: translated ATA stat/err 0x51/04 to SCSI SK/ASC/ASCQ 0xb/00/00 [ 7.854471] ata12: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } [ 7.854476] ata12: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError }
The SATA/RAID chipset is Marvel 88se63xx/64xx.
04:00.0 RAID bus controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. Device 6440 (rev 02) 05:00.0 RAID bus controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. Device 6440 (rev 02)
I thought I'd post it here since this forum is where most of the Ubuntu / Alternative OS discussions are going on.
Does anyone else running Ubuntu see the same messages in your "dmesg" log? Any way to fix them?

i dont know what the error means, but i would advice you to use the 10.04 version and NOT the 10.11 version of Ubuntu. The 10.04 version is a LTS (Long Term service) which means you can get updates for 5 years for server and 3 years for desktop. Try that and maybe something will change..
