OLD TUTORIAL!! The more recent version of this tutorial can be found on newer post. See end of this thread.
I said in one of my previous posts that i would put a tutorial how to get mediatomb to work but im afraid i will only post PS3 media server tutorial instead. Why? because if we talk about transcoding ps3 media server is ALOT better then mediatomb and the other difference between these two media servers is that mediatomb has a web-interface to manage your directorys.
If there are really more then 5 people wanting me to post a mediatomb-tutorial then ill do it. But PS3 media server has more priority this time.
Oke i got that off my back so lets get started.
Stuff i worked with:
Hardware (computer):
Processor: Intel Pentium Dual core @ 2.66 ghz
RAM: 2 GB
Rest is not important...
Software:OS: Linux Ubuntu 10.04 32bit ( This is my only OS.. im not running other OS's as a dualboot)
Java: java version "1.6.0_18"
Extra: I work with terminal although everything also can be done using your mouse.
---------------------
NAS (Hardware):
Model: Thecus N5200B Pro
CPU: 1.5 Ghz (original one for now at least)
RAM: 1 GB (upgraded from 512 MB)
NAS (software):
To follow this tutorial you got to have ubuntu version installed of course.
thecususergroup.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=n5200modifications&thread=3992&page=1#18351- Webmin is also "recommended"
www.webmin.com/------------------------------
This tutorial is suppose to be followed on a linux computer.Step 1: Download PS3 media server (linux version beta one)
ps3mediaserver.googlecode.com/files/pms-generic-linux-unix-1.20.409-BETA.tgzStep 2: Extract this file so you would end up with a folder. (
Right Mouse-button-->"extract here")
Step 3: Now before you get in to the folder first install java if you haven't installed it yet.
First go to System-->Administration-->Software Sources-->second tab (other software) and check "http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu lucid partner" if you use 10.04 version of ubuntu other versions are the same but mines the "lucid". And then click on "reload".
Step 4: If you have done that go to terminal (Applications-->Accesoires-->terminal) and copy paste this line..
sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-fonts
Step 5: After the installation of java go to the directory of PS3 media server and open "PMS.sh" ( click on RUN).
Step 6: PS3 media server window will appear and then configure your settings except 2 settings. ( Go to General Configuration ..TAB and put "force networking on interface" on eth0 or eth1 i dont know which network interface you use on your NAS. Second setting type "Force ip of the server" your ip-address of your NAS.
Step 7: At "navigation/Share settings" put your the directorys of your NAS you want to to play on your media center and not the ones on your computer.
example: mine is like /media/RAID5/Movies
Step 8: If you have done all of this then save all of this by clicking on button save. PS3 media server will automatically make a "pms.conf" file where all of your settings are stored.
Open the file pms.conf to check if everything is stored correctly. The share's have to be like
example: \/media\/RAID5\/Movies,\/media\/RAID5\/TV_Shows, etc. etc.
between the directorys is NOT a V but this \ and this / right next to eachotherCopy this file to one of your directorys on your NAS so you can get it using CLI (command line interface).
Extra: Oke if you have done all of this then we have cleared about 60-70 procent of this tutorial. Next we have to get ps3 media server running on the NAS.
Step 9: Connect to your NAS using SSH.
i would recommend using ubuntu terminal because with this you can just paste everything you copied on you computer. Copy--paste or type this line:
VLC & Mplayer:
ssudo add-apt-repository ppa:lucid-bleed/ppa
With this line you get the latest version of VLC and MplayerNow add this line to get the beta version of ps3 media server
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:paissad/pms-linux
Step 10: If you have succesfully added the 3 lines above then proceed with this step and install ps3 media server:
sudo apt-get install pms-linux
It takes its time so in the mean time get your self a drink or something Step 11: If the installation is done then ps3 media server is running but we are not done yet. browse to the directory where you putted the pms.conf using "cd" command.
and copy it like this
sudo cp pms.conf /etc/
Step 12: And finally we have to restart the ps3 media server service so it sees the new pms.conf file instead the old one using next command.
sudo /etc/init.d/pms-linux restart
AND CONGRATULATIONS YOU ARE THE NEW OWNER OF A WONDERFUL PRODUCT.
If you have any questions please ask.
Edit: updated the PPA line vlc & mplayer
