has anyone tried to install the OS on an SD card?
there are really cheap adapters from SD to 2,5 IDE out there. And SD is also really cheap.
I actually have only a 2 GB MOD. Ubuntu says that is enough. But I didn't had it installed, because I'm waiting vor my VGA-adapter.

I've been looking into installing Ubuntu server on a new DOM and my only concern is the quantity of write cycles that the DOM will allow. According to the transcend site the 4GB DOM has an endurance rating of "2,000,000 Program/Erase cycles" www.transcendusa.com/support/dlcenter/datasheet/TSXXDOM44H-S%28128MB_4GB%29%20v1.0.pdfHave any of you changed fstab to use the tmpfs RAM disk for the /tmp directory as is suggested when installing Linux to USB flash drives? Any other tips for maximizing the DOM lifetime running a Linux OS? Or don't worry the hard drives or or mainboard will die by then?

I am also interested in an OS replacement, but am worried about DOM wear if the installation is not done properly, e.g., /tmp and other write-heavy applications. Has anyone figured this piece out yet? Or is the common thinking to install a Live{CD,DVD} distro on a USB stick and not use the DOM at all?

Hello Everyone,
Just wondering if anyone can validate and share information if there's any differences or particular notes to consider should a person be trying to use OS alternative on N5200 vs. N5200 pro when it comes to performing the upgrade.
I'm in transition of modding and upgrading my own N5200 pro. Already upgraded memory and soldered VGA connector and waiting for my DOM so would like to know if there's something in particular different between the 2 systems or will it be the same regardless.

Hi all, The mvsas driver in Linux has been iffy for ages, has anyone got practical experience of raid/syslog errors for mvsas with kernel 3 installs ?

I think the best way to go is the Lime-technology unRAID. It even fits on a 128MB DOM, which is rare, I don;t even think Freenas will do that.
I know this is a long dead post, but I figured I would chime in.

I am using openWRT (Attitude Adjustment, 12.09 final) on my N5200Pro and use the Thecus as a router/firewall with storage. It is actually designed to run in tight environments, so I haven't upgraded the RAM and/or CPU yet.
I pulled the DOM and put it aside and I am booting the Thecus from a USB key at the moment.

I know that this post is very old but I am hoping that I can still secure some help and advice from here.
I am looking to install Ubuntu 14.0.4 server on my Thecus 5200. NON-PRO. I have upgraded the RAM and am making enquiries about a DOM. However i am wondering why I need to install onto a DOM at all. Is it possible to install directly onto the clean RAID. I was hoping to do this although after putting in a single HDD it was not visible during the partitioning stage of the install. Only the source USB was visible, after removing the original DOM. Is it possible to create the RAID and install Linux directly onto the RAID and how would I do so.
Thanks for any assitance or advice you can offer.
Regards
redmondsau

That won't be very smart! iff your raid faills, so will your OS.
