Following on from a thread running on the Hexus forums:
(Thecus N5200Pro and Logitech Squeezebox Server)
and the question asked by 'bloodyguitars' at the end of the thread before the forums were closed.
In sum, I previously had 4 x 500GB drives in a RAID5 and there was an irritating delay (around 2 seconds) between selecting a menu item and it being actioned, particularly when selecting a track to play.
I have now reconfigured my system as follows:
RAID0: 2 x 500GB drives with PERL & Squeezebox modules installed and a copy of all my music.
RAID5: 3 x 1.5TB drives used purely for back-ups of all my data.
I was going to set-up a JBOD with just a single drive for the music but decided to try a RAID0. Both are vulnerable to drive failure but I have plenty of spares so am not worried about that. Using a RAID0 has completely eliminated the delays and it's a far better experience running through both my Duet and Radio.
I hope this helps someone.
Regards

It's good to see someone still fiddling around with what they have and trying to make it better. I haven't noticed the delay that you mentioned but I did notice the delay after pressing the button on the remote and the song actually playing. I changed the batteries but it didn't seem to help. I wonder if its the remote itself or the delay that you are referring to. So I am guessing that you rebuilt your array. Is there a way to rebuild your array without losing the data? I know it's a stupid question but you never know until you ask. Currently I have 5 1TB HDDs in RAID 5. I would love to have a similar environment like you have, 3 drives for backup and 2 for data. Could you please outline the steps you followed for building the RAID0 and RAID5 within the same box? On a side note, I was messing around with YAMJ to build a movie jukebox to fit my needs. Check it out if you haven't already. And looking for a new remote for the Squeezebox. <br />

Hi bloodyguitars,
The one thing all this fiddling around has taught me is that the manual for the Thecusn5200Pro is appalling; it simply doesn't go into enough detail where required. It assumes a level of knowledge that won't be there for most who are not IT networking professionals - a common problem when guides/instructions are written by developers/experts.
The delay you describe between selecting a song and it actually playing is precisely what I was experiencing and have now eliminated. I will outline the steps I took below.
I should say that everything on my NAS is backed up elsewhere so the only inconvenience to me in rebuilding my RAID is the time it takes.
Anyway, here goes (I started from scratch):
- Set up two drives as RAID0 and set this as the Master RAID. The Master RAID is where all modules are installed - obviously essential for PERL and Squeezebox Server.
(If you're short of space then I would consider a single drive as a JBOD instead of the RAID0. I only stream music so 500GB is ample at this time though when one of these drives goes I will probably install larger ones).
- Copy your music across, install PERL and Squeezebox Server and get this whole set-up working.
- Now install the rest of your drives and set them up as RAID5. Do not select 'Master RAID' for this.
- Set up your back-up destination as a folder on this RAID set-up. (I map the 'Music' and 'Back-up' destinations as network drives).
That's basically it. I can't recall all the finer details but you're obviously familiar with setting up a RAID so it should be straighfroward.
Good luck.

Looks like he updated the Squeezeboxserver module to 7.6 The latest version of the module available for download : N5200_SQUEEZEBOXSERVER_v7_6_0.zip (~ 60 Mb, released 10. Feb 2011) Got an error during install (uploading the mod) but asked him for help. Will post update if more info gets available
