Hello all,
I am trying to setup the rsync module so that files can be backed up from another NAS to my N5200. The other nas has a Rsync server backup built in.
So far i have tried but failed. in the Rsync log, it seems to fail when trying to look up the name of the folder in the N5200
Can any one give me any pointers to try.
Thecus RSYNC Log 2010/03/27 11:49:06 [2046] name lookup failed for 192.168.101.10: Name or service not known 2010/03/27 11:49:06 [2046] connect from UNKNOWN (192.168.101.10) 2010/03/27 11:49:06 [2046] unknown module 'backup' tried from UNKNOWN (192.168.101.10)
Rsync.conf gid = users read only = true transfer logging = false log file = /var/log/rsyncd.log pid file = /var/run/rsyncd.pid hosts allow = 192.168.1.10
[backup] comment = backup Files path = /raid/data/backup read only = no list = yes uid = sys gid = root
Thank you in advance!

Hello Peter. Thanks for your help and detailed guide, it is working now. Just wondering, for the other NAS, it seems that it cannot detect how much space is left and also what folders are on the Thecus NAS. Is it most likely due to the Rsync Server version which is missing the following functions? Also for Rsync, it seems to copy all files again everytime it is run? Thanks.

Hi cavey, Please check Your system times - rsync checks on date and size of a file for decision to copy or not - You can check only on size with the option "--size-only" - see here for a detailed options description : ss64.com/bash/rsync_options.html. I don't understand this question : br Peter

Hello Peter,
Ok got it for the size comparison part. Basically Rsync will read all files but will not change them unless they are different in time.
For the other nas, during the setup, it has a kind of auto complete. meaning it you type in \xxxxx , it will pop up a list for you to choose (meaning all the thecus nas folders it can access) , but for my case it is blank.
Also it is supposed to be able to read the amount of space left on the target rsync server, in this case the thecus nas, but it will just show that it cannot get the HDD space left.
So just wondering due to function limitation.
Thanks again.

I still don't have the point So You want to fetch the data to the N5200 from the other NAS which runs the rsync daemon to backup Your data. You also want to fetch data from the N5200?? If the above config file is the one You are running on the N5200, then only one folder which is published (backup) - from the log and the conf file I see also that You want to access from 192.168.101.10, but You only allow the IP 192.168.1.10. Actually I would do it the following way: 1) configure and start the rsync daemon on the other NAS 2) install the RSYNC module on the N5200, but would not enable it 3) fetch data with a script (running on the N5200) which contains the rsync commands from the other NAS to the backup folder on te N5200 Thats it - there is no need that the rsync daemon is running on the N5200. br Peter

Hello Peter, maybe with the picture will be easier to see. Basically, the other NAS allows you to choose a list of folders fron the target NAS (in this case the Thecus N5200) but the list will always be blank. Also it should also show you how much space is left on the Thecus N5200 but in this case it just shows Remote Size rsync did not support this feature, So am wondering is it due to a function limitation. Rsync will run regardless even if this step is not working. In the thecus logs 2010/04/05 20:21:14 [1977] rsyncd version 3.0.3pre1 starting, listening on port 873 2010/04/05 20:23:29 [3081] name lookup failed for 192.168.101.10: Name or service not known 2010/04/05 20:23:29 [3081] connect from UNKNOWN (192.168.101.10) 2010/04/05 20:23:29 [3082] name lookup failed for 192.168.101.10: Name or service not known 2010/04/05 20:23:29 [3082] connect from UNKNOWN (192.168.101.10) 2010/04/05 20:23:29 [3083] name lookup failed for 192.168.101.10: Name or service not known 2010/04/05 20:23:29 [3083] connect from UNKNOWN (192.168.101.10) 2010/04/05 20:23:29 [3081] module-list request from UNKNOWN (192.168.101.10) 2010/04/05 20:23:29 [3083] module-list request from UNKNOWN (192.168.101.10) 2010/04/05 20:23:29 [3084] name lookup failed for 192.168.101.10: Name or service not known 2010/04/05 20:23:29 [3084] connect from UNKNOWN (192.168.101.10) 2010/04/05 20:23:29 [3084] unknown module 'backup backup Files' tried from UNKNOWN (192.168.101.10) 2010/04/05 20:23:30 [3085] name lookup failed for

The host 192.168.101.10 is not allowed to access Your N5200 - it's only host 192.168.1.10 - at least according to the config file in Your first post. If You change something in the config file You have to disable/enable the module so that the rsync daemon reads in the new settings. br Peter
