Hi All,
I have modified my N5500 as it is on my desk near to monitor. In the original version the noise is unacceptable. I bought a 92mm Noctua NF-B9 fan. This fan has 2 additional noise adapters for different speed and cooling. For the power supply I bought a Papst fan 412.
After installing and exchanging this 2 fans the N5500 is very silent! Additional I have insulated the case with insulation material.
This is absolut perfect now;my 3 Hard Disks makes more noice as the fans, but this is acceptable.

Have you measured before/after temperatures?
Can you describe the insulation material and where you installed it inside?? Any pictures?

The N5500 comes with a pretty big variety of goodies to get you going. Of course the power cord, which is a must. They also include drivers to use the system, and backup software to keep your important data safe. There are screws to secure the drives, and a couple of keys so you can lock the drives to make sure they are not stolen. There is also a USB cable, and to my surprise a CAT5e cable. Since this is a more high end device I was expecting a CAT6 cable, but at least they throw you a free cable. Finally there is a manual and a warranty card in case the device breaks.Average file sizes increaseing at a huge rate, while your computers hard drive stays the same size. You may be someone who needs to store many files, or just a few large ones. What ever your application, a NAS system can not only free up space on your computer, but allow for more expansion options over your computer (especialy laptop). in the time it takes you to tear your whole laptop apart, or open your case and screw in a new HDD, you could have installed multiple hard drives in the N5500 NAS. Not only that, but you can accesses these hard drives from any computer on your network, so you can choose to work in the most comfortable in your office or house. Today we will try out one of the higher end NAS systems, the Thecus N5500.

Thecus is pushing this product at both business and home users. The company boasts that with the unique dual-DOM design, businesses do not need to worry about down-time due to unexpected system failure but also paints the N5500 as the perfect solution for storing all of your digital content. With IP-cam support, the N5500 can be configured as a surveillance system.Average file sizes increaseing at a huge rate, while your computers hard drive stays the same size. My Thecus N5500 was out of it's standard warranty period, so decided to try and use silent fans, as the noise volume coming from the cooling fans was very annoying.
My N5500 is fully populated with five (5) 2TB 7200rpm Sata2 in RAID5
So as I have always used Noctura fans, use the 92mm NF-B9for the main case fan. Ran it full speed 1600rpm, 64.3m3/hr, 17.6dBA - spec from their website. Straight forward swap.
Use a Scythe Mini Kaze Ultra 40x20 for the power supply fan. Ran it full speed 3600rpm, 8.3m3/hr, 19.6dBA - spec from their website. Installation of this fan require a little modification. The power supply is wrapped in what appears to be clear mylar and double sided tape closed. Breaking the seal, which you have to do to get access to the old fan cabling, leaves a tell -tale sign that someone has tampered. So once you do break the seal, bye-bye warranty.
The cable on the new Scythe was not long enough and the connector was too big to fit onto the power supply board. So some side cutters, a soldering iron, some heat-shrink, and cut off the old fan and joined it to the old fan cabling. No issues. It was very simple for me since I use to be an Electronics Tech, so was a no brainer. But even still, slow and careful and 10 minutes to do it all once you have everything together, and you're done.
Put it all back together and now running Sweeeettt !!! So quiet !!!!! I love it. Been running 5 days no issues under my standard load and conditions. But then it's in a home office environment and not hammered like a small office environment. Use it primary as a backup store and a place to put all my music and movies.
Comparing the old fans to the new: Case 92x92x25mm Adda AD0912MX-A76GL 2400rpm, 73.9m3/hr, 31.3dBA
Noctura NF-B9 1600rpm, 64.3m3/hr, 17.6dBA
Power Supply 40x40X20mm Adda AD0412HB-C50 7800rpm, 17.1m3/hr, 31.9dBA
Scythe Mini Kaze Ultra 3600rpm, 8.3m3/hr, 19.6dBA
Obviously less air movement with the Quiet fans. Particularly on the power supply fan. So I am keeping an eye on it. But to date no issues. If I remember, I'll update in a week or two.
Regards

Any suggestions on repairing the PSU fan? I mangled the cable when I tried to swap in a Scythe SY124020L. Can I buy an adapter or replacement extension cable that I can splice with?

As long as the plug end is okay, should be no problem to splice in a new section of cable or purchase another fan.
If getting another fan, the original is an Adda AD0412HB-C50. I spliced in a Scythe Mini Kaze Ultra but it only has half the air flow.
