If you use a cable modem like the one provided by KabelBW in Germany, you don't need a dedicated router anymore.
The Thecus N3200 Pro can do the job if the cable-modem is connected to the WAN plug and the rest of your home network to its LAN connector:
local PCs --- giga switch ---- LAN N3200 WAN --- cabel modem -- Internet
please make sure that you switch on the IP sharing and the DHCP server as usual in the web admin of the N3200.
If you don't need or have a dedicated WLAN access point you can pretty much eliminate an standard router such as a slow Fritz-Box behind your cable modem. I get fantastic throughput to the internet with this setup.
The only problem I had is the following:
I run a local web server as one of the "PCs" behind the router and firewall. It can be accessed from the local network but cannot reach it if I am on the road outside my house.
local web server on 10.0.1.122 --- giga switch ---- LAN N3200 WAN --- cabel modem --- Internet
While it is a standard feature in any DSL-router-combi to open up ports for access from outside the internet into a local server this is missing in the N3200 web admin.
Having some basic knowledge of unix and firewalls, I simply added this command to the startup (eg. /etc/cfg/rc )
iptables -A PREROUTING -t nat -p tcp -i eth0 --dport 12200 -m state --state NEW,ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j DNAT --to 10.0.1.122:80
If you also switch on the dynamic dns as explained in the N3200 manual, I was able to reach my local web server through the N3200 running as a firewall and router in addition to its functionality as a NAS:
myDynamicDNSName.dyndns.org:12200
this url now points to my local server running on 10.0.1.122 in my local network 10.0.1.xxx on standard port 80.
I hope this little story is helpful for everybody who likes to save energy by removing unnecessary devices.
