Well there's always got to be one crazy fool to try each CPU... Why not you ) Solaris has been done... www.onbeat.dk/thecus/index.php/N5200Pro_Alternate_firmwareI built a home box before the Thecus with a 8 port high point Sata controller. Unfortunately I populated it with WD 400 gig RE drives. They all failed in under a year, eventually managing to loose two in one go and eating all my data. I upgraded the PSU in my box, I purchased a UPS/power conditioner, and I added some more air extractors to keep things cool. I then replaced the drives with the new WD 500 gig, and guess what they did... Yup, you got it. Even the spare drive which I had "borrowed" to put into my removable USB case failed, so it wasn't an issue with my RAID box. A gave up with WD and decided to try the cheapest I could find, the 1Gig Samsungs Spinpoint F1, and guess what, they're fine! I have 5 of them are in my Thecus to this day. The home made box gets powered up every now and then to backup my N5200, but it's too d**n loud to leave on 24x7, plus it's a bit power hungry! I'm amazed at the lack of coverage the WD drive problems got, I did find a few mentions of issues with the 500gig drives buried in some forums, but it never made it to the techie news sites. They obviously have some very good PR influence.

Well there's always got to be one crazy fool to try each CPU... Why not you :o) yeh... if i had CPUs laying around i'd be all over it :) oOoOoo.... VGA header first, CPUs second, then i'm all over that project.... wow, i must have good drive karma.... *knock wood* the 1GB WD drive i bought in 1994 is still spinning in a machine i built for my dad... hey, i paid $400 for that d**ned harddrive! wanna get my $ out of it ;) yeh i have a home built opensolaris box with a couple of cheap 120mm fans from radioshack ($10 each) they keep the drives chilly... but they're loud as all hell...

Oh well, my plans for 2Ghz 533FSB didn't work :-(
It won't boot... Gets stuck on Booting...
Dropping the clock back to 100Mhz gets it up and running, but obviously at 1.5Ghz! My 1G DDR is 400Mhz too... :-(
I think I might have to put a vga header on... *eeeek*

found a guy on ebay selling 80 Foxconn VGA headers at a whack..... messaged him to see if he'd sell me 5 ;D also bid on an 'SM, now i need to track down 1GB of PC3200, hopefully not the non-working type you ended up with i'd put the stock CPU back in and OC it with the new ram and see if it works that way (you said the new ram worked at stock cpu and clock...) if i have to buy all 80 VGA headers i'll send ya one

I don't think the RAM is my problem.
It gets too far on the boot, I get past POST, it beeps, I think it's on the kernel load my error occurs.
I'll find out later when I start soldering wires to the vga header :-)
First I have to let it finish backing up!
It might be safer to go for a P4M that has the 400Mhz FSB not the 533

guys im also planning to upgrade my cpu.
I already put Linux Ubuntu 10.04 lts on it and upgraded the RAM to 1 GB. Ive already purchased a vga-header and i want to put "media tomb" on my nas (Its an media server with transcoding for my ps3). Ive read somewhere that transcoding needs alot of cpu power so this step has to be made.
is there any other cpu that is even better that the ones that has been posted? maybe a core 2 duo? or a 2.6 or 3.0 ghz single core?

Woot,
Finally decided to upgrade CPU... Using SL7EM. Also decided to add xtra cooling so got myself another higher performance cpu fan (6 CFM) and so far so good. Also made some minor changes in BIOS to adjust for memory being used. Keeping fingers crossed that it remains consistant. So far... notice better snappy performance with web interface response... Found the same with webpage as well. Gonna test out transfer rates between now and weekend...
Cheers Nibbles

also ordered Pentium-M 760 Cooler Master VGA cooler 1GB DDR-400
not expecting much maximum throughput, but it seems my Thecus is always busy and then throuput drops to 800K or so. sometimes it's in a good mood and does the 25Mb/s but not often

after a long time thinking i decided to replace it with the fastest CPU around.
Intel Pentium M 780 2.26GHz SL7VB
Its been in there for almost 4 days without any problems. I have a steady 25 MB/s. Because i replaced Thecus OS with Ubuntu 10.04 server i decided to replace my RAID5 (4 x 1 TB WD) with (4 X 2 TB). They are formatted on ext4 instead of the ext2 that Thecus OS formatted. All i can say now is that my N5200B pro cant be upgraded anymore.
CPU: Intel Pentium M 780 2.26GHz SL7VB (Instead of 1.5 Ghz) RAM: 1 GB (Instead of 512 MB) DOMDISK: 8 GB transcend (Instead of 128 MB) OS: Ubuntu 10.04 (Instead of Thecus OS)
Btw. Replacing the CPU was kind of difficult at the beginning, but it turned out kind of easy. Just look carefully what you do and then it will be piece of cake.

Hey Shinger,
Good to know that you got that working!
I, too, just picked up SL7VB (2.26GHz) CPU, upgraded the RAM to 1GB (PC-3200), and the unit boots fine. However, after about 1 or 2 minutes, the unit powers down by itself. After some troubleshooting, I suspect that if I load all 5 disks (Hitachi 2TB), it will initial self shutdown. However, if I remove all disks, the unit stays powered up. I'm leaning towards the PSU cannot handle the higher power requirement of the newer CPU and full loaded 2TB disks.
Has anyone else seen similar problems? If so, does the replacement PSU for the N5200BR Pro have higher power rating? I bought this unit around 4 - 5 years ago, and looks like the PSU has a max rating of 184W.
The disks I've loaded up are Hitachi 2TB SATA 3 (6GB/s). I'm on the latest firmware (2.00.18.5).
