Hello guys,
i have a 2100 box with a single WD4000 YR disk in JBOD (on the ok list), it has been working like a dream for almost a year as a media server to my old xbox/xbmc.
But today, just when my son (3yo home sick) was starting up our xbox to watch he's iceage video, we could not find any folders. So i log on the web interface and no folders! I can see the disk in <disk information> as ok. but nothing in Folders.
So i: reboot, press reset button and even go to factory default. Nothing.
Then i open it, remove the disk, and download KNOPPIX bootable iso (im a xp user and know little of linux) to see if all our video files are gone, but they there (well... the folders are). But i cannot access the media files in the folders, as i do not have the privileges. Also, i cannot access the log file, but i guess that has to do with no folders to read the from.
So my question is: Is there hope of getting my folders back? or do i have to wipe all my 350gb of media and start all over again?
Also, as i know very little linux, how can i change the folders so i can rescue some of the files?
Thanks for all help.
desperate n00b dad.

Unfortunately you're probably going to have to learn a little bit of linux Firstly if you haven't already done so, install the ssh module. Enable it and use it to reset the root password. onbeat.dk/thecus/index.php/N2100_ModuleThen download and install putty www.putty.nl/download.htmlUse putty to log in. Then... cd /app/etc/sambaThis takes you to the samba config folder. Then ls -lwill give you something like this N2100:/app/etc/samba# ls -l drwxrwxrwx 2 root root 0 Mar 10 2006 private/ lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 18 Jan 8 21:40 smb.conf -> /raid/sys/smb.conf* -rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3561 Dec 29 10:11 smb.conf.default* -rw-rw-r-- 1 administ smbusers 18 Nov 21 06:31 usermap -rw-rw-r-- 1 administ smbusers 0 Nov 21 06:30 usermap.bakNext cat smb.conf or cat /raid/sys/smb.confWill list your samba settings, including your shares. Now what you find (or dont find) here dictates what you do next. If all your shares appear to be listed here then there is something very strange happening. If they're gone then you'll need to re-create them. (why they're gone is a different issue). If you need to re-create them then it's probably easiest to create a new "folder" then duplicate the settings that will appear in the smb.conf Using vi you can edit smb.conf ( BACK IT UP FIRST !!!!!) and add your other folders. It's a painful process if you have a lot of folders but... An easier way might be to initially modify the "new folder" to point to "/raid/". A restart will then give you a share that exposes everything to you and allow you to do the rest via windows. You'll need a text editor which handles unix files natively. Notepad wont cut it (try ultraedit or textedit ).

Thank you for helping! I have now reset the root password and logged on as root using putty. I have found smb.conf but i get Read Error: Input/output error when i cat it. So, the conf file is corrupted..... thats why i have no folders. Whats the best route next? Try to rescue whats on the disk? if so, how to i change owner on the folders to get access? I cannot thank you enough for the help i have gotten, gives me hope i can rescue my media.

The fact that your modules are still working indicates that you drive is still working which is a good thing. Is the smb.conf.default file still there and can you "cat" it? If smb.conf.default is stuffed too then you have a bigger problem. Do you have the symbolic link when you looked in the folder ( ls -l /app/etc/samba )? i.e. smb.conf -> /raid/sys/smb.confIf yes to both then do the following. mv /raid/sys/smb.conf /raid/sys/smb.conf.deadcp -p /app/etc/samba/smb.conf.default /raid/sys/smb.conf Then cross your fingers and restart If this fails then you will need to try and delete smb.conf rm /raid/sys/smb.conf then try the copy. private message me the output of this: ls -l /raid

I copied the file, but no. Odin did not listen PMed my raid list. I can now cat my smb.conf file, but it is empty. Thecus_N2100:/app/etc/samba# ls -l drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 0 Mar 10 2006 private/ lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 18 Jan 12 15:57 smb.conf -> /raid/sys/smb.conf -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Jan 10 20:06 smb.conf.default do you think it is possible to recreate smb.conf? Also, the first time i rebooted the yes.box did not find the raid (and no modules etc..) but after i removed the power cord and restarted, the raid came back on with modules. Good thing, i can see all my media, then i can get the most important files. So if we cant get the yes.box up and running, i can still get my most important files thx to you.

PM Sent.
Based on your listing i've created a new smb.conf for you and provided instructions to put it in place.
