Add your hard disk drive here if you did not see it in the official compatibility list. Please include make and model.

I am using a Seagate 7200.10 500Gb SATAII harddrive. It works ocassionally. I am not sure if this is a N1200 problem, a Seagate problem or a compatibility problem. Most of the time when i turn on the N1200, there will be a very soft beep, the fan will go on, then the fan goes off and nothing happens (waited more than 10 minutes but the harddrive doesnt even spin up). After turning the N1200 off and on for a while, eventually there will be a loud beep and the fan and harddrive will spin up. Then the unit boots up (boot time of 2 minutes!) and it will function properly. The harddrive does not go into sleep mode at all.

bouncemeister, do you have your Seagate set at 3.0Gbs? Try setting the jumper to run at 1.5Gbs.
I too had similar booting up (the LAN LED just kept pulsing from bright green to dim orange and wouldn't initialize any further) until I changed my Seagate 750GB to run at 1.5Gbs. Now that seemed to be my belief until yesterday, even when running at 1.5Gbs I ran into the same problem. So what did was disconnecting the power from the N1200 and waited for 20-30min. The next boot up it went up fine so now I am leaning towards heat problems (before rebooting, the unit's status showed that CPU was maxed at 100% and fan went to around 8.5K RPM)
I also observed that if I turn off/on the N1200 by power cycling I prone to run into this problem more. Whereas, if it's beeing shut down or restarted by software (using the web browser), the boot up process is smoother. Well it's kinda tough to do this by software if you lose connection to the unit...

While i was trying to install/setup the unit, i tried the jumper to limit to 1,5Gbps, but that didn't work at that time. Now it's at default 3GBps and working, but turning the unit on is a disaster every time. When it's finally on, it'll keep working. I'll try to use the software-off tonight. See if it turns on in one time tomorrow. Heat issues can be expected since the unit doesn't have any sleep mode, the case feels really hot. I think i'm going to position a 80mm fan behind it, to cool the case. I have the fan speed at high.

The next boot up it went up fine so now I am leaning towards heat problems (before rebooting, the unit's status showed that CPU was maxed at 100% and fan went to around 8.5K RPM) I don't have a N1200, but I did have a problem very similar to your with the same drive. It was in a mediagate. I had just watch a movie, switched off and tried to mount it to my computer. It wouldn't turn on at all. Took it apart and noticed that the drive was HOT. I wated till it cooled down, connected it, and it turned on without a problem. Copied over a few large files, unmounted. Turned off, tried to remount, and same problem. Wouldn't turn on (well it tried to). Cooled down again and it turned on again without a problem. When I modified the case to allow better cooling, all problems went away. So it looks like the heat could be causing your problem. bouncemeister's problem looks to be something else (as it has problems turning on when it been off for awhile, well thats how I read it, soz if I wrong). Can you connect the drive to a PC and run seatools to see it the drive is OK? I had a similar problem with a drive that required me to turn on and off just to get the drive started, it was like the motor just didn't have enough grunt to spin the platters, but turning it on and off, kicked it on (jolt start?) for me to get my work off. Once it was on there wasn't a problem with the drive. Can you try the N2100 with a different drive, just to make sure the unit can work OK with another drive?

The ussue isn't heat related here, you read that right. I turned off the unit last night using the web interface. But this morning it wouldn't turn on (same story), it beeps softly and after a few secs the fan goes off, then nothing else happens, only hte powerled is on and the wan and lan led flash occasionally (only wan is connected). I pressed the powerbutton for three seconds and there were two soft beeps, but it wouldn't turn off. Then after a while i pushed the button again for three seconds and it turned off immediately. After a few tries i unplugged the unit shortly and tried again, then it went on with a loud beep and it works now.
I have used the seagate 500Gb sata harddrive in my pc to test it to see if is was recognised, i even copied some files, but i haven't tried seatools yet. I do have another sata drive, but no room to copy the files to. I'll see how i can fix that problem.
If i cannot get this working properly, i'll try to exchange it for a Synology DS-107e at the shop. This Synology NAS unit does have a sleep mode and an active support department.

After trying 2 different Seagate 750GB drives with the same problem starting the N1200 up, I gave up and went with a Hitachi 500GB drive. Now I don't have to hold my breath when turning the thing on. And yes the 750GB does run very hot especially now in the summer.

Hitachi T7500 320 GB, no problems yet for 2 weeks. I put 8 rubber pieces between screws >< cabinet >< HD to make it even more silent. Only gives off soft "knock"´s when working hard One user, r32190, told us that his T7500 32GB, got to hot and stopped working. Temperature, in my case, was arround 45 degrees celcius, maybe more inside. After some modifications to N1200, temperature is below 40 C and HD is still going strong.

All yhis makes it sounds like Seagate drives have compatibility problems and Hitachi not. Well may be not.
I've just realized that the problem could be with the power brick; that it doesn't provice enough current for the drive to spin up. I'll have to find a power supply with higher amp to test this out....

I'm about to go replace my 500 gb 3.5" disk with a (samsung) 2.5" 320 gb disk. are there any things I should pay any special attention to?
