I have the problem that my NTFS formatted 300 GB USB-HDD isn't recognized by the N5200. Well, it's visible under SYSINFO but the folder usbhdd is empty.
Can I apply the USBHDD patch under FW 1.00.08?

I have a similar program with FAT32... Maybe the drive needs to be formated in EXT3? Hopefully someone else can shed some light on external USB drives and using them with the N5200.

I have 2 external drives that I swap in and out. One is formatted with NTFS and the other is ext3. I can read both and write to neither. I assumed the inability to write was a "feature" of the N5200. Maybe the USBHDD patch fixes that, I will give it a try.

Any results on that?
Basically, there is actually no write access to NTFS formatted partitions. Ext2, ext3 and FAT32 should be OK though.

Sorry I should have replied sooner. I still can't write to either one. I am going to keep fiddling with it, but the patch didn't fix it for me. I still can read both just fine.

Do you have ssh access to your device - would be great to track down what's wrong.....?
If so, please issue this command:
mount
The output should contain a line similar to that one:
/dev/sdf1 on /raid/data/usbhdd/sdf1 type cfat (rw,......)
What is it showing for you?

My original answer is still not explicitely answered: Can I apply the USBHDD patch on FW 1.00.08?
How can I properly partion a 750GB HDD directly on the N5200?
How can I format a disk with ext2fs or ext3fs?
How can I mount such a disk manually if the pathc does not work?
Sorry, I'm not the real Linux expert.
