I would like to reemphasize that for many (most?) users without an email server the notification is still an issue. I have Roadrunner, Gmail and Netscape mail and all three services do not work with the email notification. I do not want to add an additional unneeded service just to get email notification. Just the proper ability to setup the email account authentication is required.
I am quite happy overall with the system but this is an annoyance and I would like to be informed when I am traveling or even at home since the NAS is in a equipment room.
Apppeal to any Thecus operatives on the forum: Thecus please fix this simple issue! It is not worth the customer dissatisfaction.

Other than the add-on module listed above, you could set up an SMTP server just for these notifications. Windows Server has an SMTP client built-in, as do many (all?) iterations of Linux. Freeware SMTP / Email programs are available in abundance.
I had poor luck getting email alerts to go out until this update. The box wouldn't send through our Exchange server.
Now if I could just get the thing to authenticate against the domain!!! (But that's another topic....)

Why is it so hard for Thecus to programm the email notfication properly ?
This issue is open since the release of the N5200 and many, many support requests went to Thecus, but they are refusing to take them serious !!!
It is a joke that I have to setup an email server and to maintain the server to get the email notification working !

OK, it's taken me FOREVER to get this email notification correct for my setup. I finally struck the right combination of info to get notifications working. Turns out it's much simpler than I originally thought. Here's the background on how I did it: BACKGROUND INFO: 1. I own a domain name, which I'll refer to as foothecus.com. 2. As preparation, I set up a subdomain called nas01 (i.e. nas01.foothecus.com . Godaddy.com is my hosting provider.) 3. My ISP is Bellsouth 4. My NAS has a name, which I'll call nas01 -- notice that this is the *SAME NAME* as the subdomain I set up above. 5. The N5200 sits on my home network behind a Linksys wireless router/firewall THECUS SETUP: 1. Under Network...WAN Configuration: Hostname: nas01 Domain: foothecus.com 2. Under System...Notification: Email Notification: Enabled SMTP: mail.bellsouth.net with Port 25. (This is specific for my ISP, and it is how I send email from all my machines.) Auth type: Off SMTP Account ID: blank Account Password: blank Confirm Account Password: blank Sender's email address: blank Receiver's email address: (This is set as the email address to which I want notifications sent.)
3. Click "Apply". Now the NAS will send out notification emails with the From address of "admin@nas01.foothecus.com". This setup works for me, and hopefully it will help someone else. I have also successfully changed the "Sender's email address" without problem, but leaving it blank works fine.
