Hi all,
My N5200 has the latest firmware, and I have 2 WD1600YS drives in a RAID 1, and I have the latest firmware for the HDDs as well. However, I keep on getting the following message about once every 3 minutes in the log file:
2007/05/14 12:07:03 N5200 : Hard Disk on N5200 has an I/O error.
The N5200 is being used in a small office workgroup with about 8 users. We share the same files so there's a lot of heavy usage. Does anyone know what to do?
Thanx in advance.
Dave

Hi Dave,
is the problem still showing up?
Did you check the SMART values (use my INFO module and/or check the forum here for how to get all the SMART values manually when logged on on the N5200)?

Hi Andreas,
Lately I keep getting this message.
Hard Disk on N5200 has an I/O error. This hard disk might have bad sectors on it. Please replace the hard disk as soon as possible.
Here is the output I got from the INFO module.
RAID Info: /dev/md0 State: clean Array Size: 1949583872 bytes Device Size: 487395968 bytes Chunk Size: 64K Raid Devices: 5 Total Devices: 5 Active Devices: 5 Working Devices: 5 Failed Devices: 0 Spare Devices: 0
Disk Info: /dev/sda Smart State: ENABLED Smart Error Count: 0 Raw Read Error Rate: 36541608 Start/Stop Count: 11 Realloc Sector Count: 0 Power On Hours: 167 hours Power Cycle Count: 16 cycles Temperature: 35 celsius
Disk Info: /dev/sdb Smart State: ENABLED Smart Error Count: 0 Raw Read Error Rate: 199958160 Start/Stop Count: 10 Realloc Sector Count: 0 Power On Hours: 165 hours Power Cycle Count: 15 cycles Temperature: 37 celsius
Disk Info: /dev/sdc Smart State: ENABLED Smart Error Count: 0 Raw Read Error Rate: 213249442 Start/Stop Count: 10 Realloc Sector Count: 0 Power On Hours: 165 hours Power Cycle Count: 15 cycles Temperature: 37 celsius

From the output, I don't know which hard drive is having problem. Could you tell me what to do?
Thanks,
Rob

Hi Rob,
obviously the error message is not right or my INFO modules doesn't show enough for the SMART values...
Maybe you could check the output of the command smartctl -d marvell -a /dev/sda for the first disk and /dev/sdb, /dev/sdc, etc for the other disks.
I really don't know why the Thecus software is telling something about bad blocks but the SMART realloc sector count doesn't indicate something.
I'm wondering about your high raw read error rate (mine is still zero), but as I was telling in another thread, the interpretation of the raw values is sometimes highly manufacturer dependent - so I don't know if this really mean something.

Dave, It seems fail about your flash(DOM) . Maybe you need to change your Flash(DOM) with Thecus.

Andreas hi omega and thanx for answering. i installed ur INFO module and this is what i got from it: RAID Info: /dev/md0 State: clean Array Size: 159846656 bytes Device Size: 159846656 bytes Chunk Size: ERROR Raid Devices: 2 Total Devices: 2 Active Devices: 2 Working Devices: 2 Failed Devices: 0 Spare Devices: 0 Disk Info: /dev/sda Smart State: ENABLED Smart Error Count: 0 Raw Read Error Rate: 0 Start/Stop Count: 7 Realloc Sector Count: 0 Power On Hours: 423 hours Power Cycle Count: 6 cycles Temperature: 34 celsius Disk Info: /dev/sdb Smart State: ENABLED Smart Error Count: 0 Raw Read Error Rate: 0 Start/Stop Count: 7 Realloc Sector Count: 0 Power On Hours: 424 hours Power Cycle Count: 6 cycles Temperature: 33 celsius looks like there's nothing wrong with the SMART values. However, I noticed that my RAID Chunk size says ERROR. Does this have anything to do with my hard disk I/O error?

Hi Dave ,
The log display your disk have error [2007/05/14 12:07:03 N5200 : Hard Disk on N5200 has an I/O error. ] , But there have not show what disk is wrong. In this case ,it is almost mean your system disk is "flash" on N5200.
You can type the command "dmesg" .
If there have display disk error about "hda5" , its' mean your flash on N5200 have problem.

i installed omega's sshd and sysuser modules.
i used putty login but after i enter "sys" as user, when i enter "sys" as password it says wrong password.
on the module page for the n5200, when i try to reset the password or make a new one, it gives me the error message: ERROR: cannot set password for user sys to "sys"!

I've got the same error myself. To get the console prompt I installed the SSHD and SYSUSER modules; after that I was able to use a linux ssh program to login and access the ssh account. The only way I was able to change the sys user account password was to use the URL hack to get to the SYSUSER admin page; see onbeat.dk/thecus/index.php/N5200_Module:_INFO and replace INFO with SYSUSER to get to the SYSUSER ADMIN page. On the note of the original error - I'm getting /dev/hda5 I/O errors in dmesg. If I understand the situation I have bad flash memory and I'm going to have to get a replacement unit? Or is it possible to swap the flash memory unit without exchanging the while unit? Any info would be appreciated.
